Lunch time when you work at the mall can be very boring. You have the same options of fast food and chain restaurants daily, and that is why I was so excited when Azucar Cuban Cafe opened. This authentic Cuban restaurants supplies fresh authentic Cuban food in an unusual mall setting.

Azucar has a fairly large menu offering a variety of sandwiches, bowls, street bites and desserts. The best part of their menu, however, is their empanadas. With 10 options to choose from, and mixing and matching encouraged, you can create your perfect Cuban meal.

The empanadas are served with a side of plantain chips and a dipping sauce of your choosing. The sauce options are: mojo, black bean, avocado/cilantro, mango, chimichurri, spicy aioli, and spicy house sauce. The mango is my personal go to.

The Food:

  • Ropanada: Empanada filled with shredded seasoned flank steak and cheese

  • Thoughts: The flank steak has the perfect amount of kick, just a little spicy flavor to balance out the cheese and pastry.

  • Samba: Empanada filled with savory seasoned chicken

  • Thoughts: At heart I have a very simple taste pallet and this is my favorite empanada on the menu. The chicken stands on its own and is seasoned to Cuban spice perfection.

My favorite part about Azucar is that you can see into the kitchen and see the chef making your food. You know exactly how it is made and what is in it, and you do not have to question the freshness of your meal. It is refreshing to see a small business thriving in a mall setting by providing delicious made to order food.
